Standard GPS tells a machine roughly where it is. RTK corrects that position down to centimetres, which is the difference between a straight mowing pass and a crooked one.
What RTK actually adds
RTK stands for Real-Time Kinematic. It is a correction technique: a fixed reference point — a base station on site or a network correction service — measures the error in the satellite signal and sends a correction to the machine in real time.
With steady correction, RTK-equipped equipment commonly achieves accuracy in the range of about 1 to 3 centimetres. That level of precision is what makes a virtual boundary workable without buried wire, and what allows consecutive mowing passes to line up.
How a mowing task runs
- The operator defines the working area.
- RTK positioning locates the machine accurately inside that area.
- The software plans a mowing route within the boundary.
- The mower follows the planned route and cuts the grass automatically.
- The operator checks machine status, task progress and remaining battery on a mobile device.
The operator’s role does not disappear. It shifts from steering every pass to setting up and supervising the job while the machine handles the planned route.
Where RTK gets harder
Centimetre accuracy is not a guarantee in every location. It depends on the machine having a clear view of the sky and receiving stable corrections.
- Tree canopy. Under dense trees the satellite view is reduced and accuracy degrades.
- Buildings and structures. Working close to tall structures causes the same problem.
- Correction coverage. A base station or network service has to be available and reliable on your site.
Why it pairs with electric drive
Electric drive gives a platform for integrating positioning, machine control and battery monitoring. Because the drive, the control system and the monitoring all sit on the same electrical architecture, software development around that platform — route planning, task management, machine control — is where the next gains come from.
For sites that are mowed repeatedly, over the same defined area, that combination is the practical starting point. The more predictable the job, the more the positioning system can carry.
